Description
Hi Ed-Fi,
We wanted to raise a possible limitation of the Ed-Fi data model that we're running up against when storing course transcript grades. We have districts that schedule courses into a year long session, have multiple grading periods under that session, and award credit twice a year at the close of a grading period.
For example:
Session: 2020-2021 school year
Grading Periods:
- Semester 1
- Semester 2
In the example above, the school may offer a Algebra I class that's scheduled for the year session. They may then award 0.5 credit for the Semester 1 grading period and another 0.5 for Semester 2. Let's imagine the student receives a C for Semester 1 and an F for Semester 2.
Student academic records includes a term descriptor, but does not include a grading period descriptor. This means in the example above we would store course transcript data referencing a student academic record for the 2020-2021 school year. We'd store the 2 grades for the 2 semesters tying them to the 2020-2021 term. In the ODS, it'd be unclear which semester the student failed. We would need to also reference the grading period to know that.
Thoughts?
